The first leg in the Round of 16 at this season’s UEFA Champions League continues on Wednesday, as two legendary clubs from England and Germany get set to take to the pitch, as Chelsea visits Dortmund.
While Chelsea came out on top of Group E, losing just one of their first six matches, it has been a topsy-turvy season for the Blues thus far. While they have advanced to the Round of 16 in the UCL for the fourth-straight season, Chelsea is not having the same success at the English Premier League level. After finishing fourth in 2021-22, the club is sitting ninth in the table, struggling to compete against the league’s top teams. In UCL play, they bounced back from a loss in their group stage opener to Dinamo Zagreb, winning four of their next five contests, including a couple of big wins over second-place AC Milan.
Even though they only won two matches in the opening stage, Dortmund was able to snap the second spot in Group G, five points behind the group winner, Manchester City. Dortmund lost and drew with ManCity in their pair of contests, but wins over Copenhagen and Sevilla helped the German club advance to the Round of 16 for the first time in two seasons. In Bundesliga action, Borussia is sitting third in the table, three points back of rival Bayern Munich.
Surprisingly, this will be the first time the two clubs have ever met, in any form of competition. Chelsea will host Dortmund in the second leg in March
